Moving Up: Helping Your Child Transition to a New Classroom

Moving to a new classroom is a sign of growth, and it can also bring big feelings for children and parents alike. At Doodle Bugs, we plan transitions carefully so each child feels secure.

How we decide when a child is ready

Age is only part of the picture. We look at developmental readiness and emotional maturity, and we talk with families before any move. Our goal is a smooth, positive change that builds your child's confidence.

How we make the move gentle

  • Visits first. When possible, children spend short periods in the new room before the official move.

  • Familiar faces. Teachers share what they know about your child's routines, comforts, and interests.

  • Consistent routines. Meals, rest, and outdoor time follow a similar daily rhythm across rooms, so the day still feels familiar.

How families can help

  • Talk about it positively. "You're getting so big! Your new room has a painting easel."

  • Read a story about change. Books about starting something new give children words for their feelings.

  • Keep goodbyes short and warm. A calm, confident goodbye tells your child this is a safe place.

  • Expect some ups and downs. A few tears or tired afternoons are normal in the first week or two.

  • Update supplies. A new room may need different items. Check our "What to bring" list on the For Families page.

Stay connected

Check the Playground app for photos and updates, and feel free to message your child's new teacher. If you have concerns, our Director is always available to talk.

Every move up is a milestone worth celebrating. We can't wait to watch your child grow in their new space.
