Sun, Water, and Summer Play: Keeping Little Ones Safe and Happy

Michigan summers are short, so we make the most of them. Warm days bring water tables, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and bug hunts. A little planning keeps that fun safe.

Sun protection basics

• Apply sunscreen before drop-off. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and give it about 15 minutes to absorb before your child heads outside.

• Dress for the sun. Lightweight clothing that covers shoulders, plus a hat, goes a long way.

• Seek shade during the hottest part of the day. Midday sun is strongest, so we build in shady play and water breaks.

• Babies need extra care. Infants under six months should be kept out of direct sun. Ask your pediatrician about sun protection for your baby.

Water, water, water

Young children don't always notice when they're thirsty. We offer water often during outdoor play and after active time. At home, keep a water bottle handy and offer sips throughout the day, especially when it's hot.

Watch for signs of overheating

Flushed skin, unusual tiredness, crankiness, or a headache can be signs a child needs to cool down. Move to shade or indoors, offer water, and rest. Call your child's doctor if symptoms don't improve.

Water play is learning, too

Pouring, scooping, and splashing aren't just fun. Children practice measuring (full, empty, more, less), predict what will sink or float, and build hand strength and coordination. Try a simple setup at home: a bin of water, cups, a funnel, a sponge, and a few objects to test. Always stay within arm's reach of young children around any water, even a shallow bucket.

Shoes for summer

At Doodle Bugs, children need closed-toe shoes with rubber soles and a closed heel or heel strap every day, even in summer. They protect toes on the playground and help children run and climb safely. Flip-flops and open sandals are best saved for the backyard.
